Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon is a sequel and spin-off of the popular anime series Inuyasha. The series follows the demon hunting adventures of Towa Higurashi and Setsuna, Sesshomaru and Rin’s fraternal twin daughters, and Moroha, Inuyasha and Kagome Higurashi’s daughter.

Set ten years after Inuyasha, the second half of this first season brings the twin sisters and their fellow demon slayers into confrontation with the powerful demon Kirimaru, the one responsible for the disappearance of their parents. There is further character development and dangerous adventures which expand the Inuyasha universe. Saying more would lead to too many spoilers, so I will simply expound on some of the virtues of the series.

The idea of time traveling to different eras is managed quite well, avoiding most of the navel gazing over time paradoxes that most plots with this device suffer from. The character art is superb and still consistent with the main Inuyasha franchise.

Although this series does suffer from some of the “same-ishness” from episode to episode, there is a slow and satisfying arc that creates room for the story to move forward and for viewers to fall in love with its many characters.

The Video

The digital animation for Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon comes through in this 1.78:1 AVC 1080p encodement with vibrant colors that are not oversaturated. Line art looks crisp without stairstepping. Overall the image looks good, but there is just a hint of softness most likely inherent to the source.

The Audio

The series is provided with the original Japanese-language mix and an English dub both in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo. They both have clean sound and fairly decent dynamic range with wide stereo imaging.

The Supplements

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon comes with some basic on-disc bonus features including the typical clean opening and ending credits, and two audio commentaries with the cast and crew (episodes 15 and 16). The audio commentaries with English cast and crew are interesting and friendly in tone. Additionally, there are collectibles included with the set that is packaged in a high quality, matte chipboard slipcover.

  • Episode 15 & 16 Audio Commentaries with the English Cast
  • Art Gallery
  • Clean opening and ending credits
  • Booklet with character art and descriptions, episode synopses, and production credits
  • Premium Art Card
  • Poster

The Final Assessment

Action, a vast world, interconnected characters, and amazing designs make Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon one of the epic anime series to watch. This is highly bingeable, eye-popping entertainment.
