The Performance

[Rating:5/5]

Sure The Velvet Underground may have inspired these guys and this sort of music, but The Stooges arguably put out the first albums that could really be considered “punk” and of those albums, Raw Power is the masterpiece. Its title perfectly sums up its sound and its subject matter – it is raw, powerful, immediate, and dangerous. It’s rebellious, sexual, gritty, and frank. Songs like “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell,” and “Search and Destroy” hit you over the head with their clamor; with the intensity of suppressed violence and sexual aggression like a train going off the rails. The music looks ahead to the sounds of the Sex Pistols, Hüsker Dü, and Sonic Youth.

On September 3, 2010, the reformed Stooges performed at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Monticello, New York, with six fans chosen through an internet contest getting the chance to film their show from the audience. The setlist was the entire Raw Power album in a different order, but that new order was somehow perfect, and at 63, so was Iggy Pop, even if his shirtless torso wasn’t quite as tight as it used to be.

From the roaring opening of “Raw Power” to the crowd chanter “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” the band was absolutely stunning; they whole set just percolated with electricity and heat. Were these guys really in their 60s? Some of the youngsters these days should take notes.

Don’t pop this Blu-ray in expecting a pristine nature documentary, the video here is as raw as the musical performance it captures. It arrives in a 1080i/60 AVC encodement and there is video noise, aliasing and some weird looking flesh tones. What can one expect from footage captured by six fans in the audience picked from an internet contest?

Audio Quality

[Rating:3.5/5]

Totally skip the lossy Dolby Digital 5.0 mix on this release, because it is pointless. There’s hardly any ambience in the surround channels, the low frequencies disappear, and stereo separation is narrow. By contrast, the LPCM 2.0 Stereo (48kHz/24-bit) mix is much better. It has full sound with nice, deep, tight bass, punchy midrange, and a wide stereo soundfield.

The fans who won the contest didn’t only get to film the concert performance, but they also got to interview the band after the show, and that backstage interview is on here alongside the fans’ contest submission videos and Iggy Pop and Dick Manitoba concert promos.

The supplements:

  • The Fans Interview The Stooges (1.78:1; 1080i/60; 00:44:00)
  • Fan Submission Videos (1.78:1; 1080i/60)
  • Iggy & Dick Manitoba Promos (1.78:1;1080i/60; 00:05:36)

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

Raw Power Live – In the Hands of the Fans is a powerful concert video that rocks from start to finish. These veterans show the youngsters how it’s done and bring this classic album back to life with vigor. Highly recommended.
