In Justice League: Warworld, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are whisked away to the planet Warworld, where a constant state of gladiatorial battle is the norm. The problem is that neither of them remembers who they are and they are separated from each other, going through different realities – a western town filled with gunslingers and a cache of gold everyone wants or a black and white B-movie world where the townsfolk are convinced they are being replaced by aliens. Somehow the three superheroes must remember who and what they are, find each other, and escape the perpetual hellscape they are in, in order to save Warworld and the Justice League.

From the opening western sequence with a gunslinging Wonder Woman, the film starts out with a very heavy influence from Westworld, but as it progresses and reaches its climax, things are revealed that make it more in line with the usual DC Universe world. That said, this is an enjoyable, action-led film with dazzling animation and gripping action.

Justice League: Warworld features Jensen Ackles (Batman), Darren Criss (Superman), and Frank Grillo (Agent Faraday) and is directed by Jeff Wamester, who has done character designs for the Guardians of the Galaxy TV series and Ultimate Spider-Man, among other shows.

The Video

Justice League: Warworld is one of the best overall DC Universe animated releases on 4K Ultra HD I have seen. The 1.78:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) HDR10 encodement is free from noise, banding, or aliasing and has a filmic look thanks to some digital “grain” added to the imagery. The HDR10, with a MaxLL of 979 nits and MaxFALL of 737 nits, is also one of the brighter, more colorful releases with superb ‘pop’ in the specular highlights and an added vibrancy to the colors. The black and white sequence has excellent contrast as well.

The Audio

As usual, Warner Animation provides this DC Universe release with a solid lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that is generally aggressive, but also well balanced. Low end is meaty, underpinning the action with good thump, and discrete sounds and ambiance are spread around. Dialogue is always clear and intelligible.

The Supplements

This is one of the more barebones DC Universe original animated movie releases on home video. The release comes with only two featurettes (on the included Blu-ray only) and the Movies Anywhere digital code.

  • Movies Anywhere Digital Code
  • Illusions on Warworld (1080p; 00:07:45)
  • The Heroic, the Horrible, and the Hideous (1080p; 00:07:52)

The Final Assessment

Justice League: Warworld is a fun entry in the DC Universe with excellent animation that places the big three DC superheroes in unusual circumstances, shaking things up and resulting in an entertaining, refreshing take on the mythology. Warner’s 4K Ultra HD is an excellent disc to throw on in the home theater for a popcorn distraction.

Justice League: Warworld is out on 4K Ultra HD Combo July 25, 2023, from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
