Aurora Snow’s Once Upon a Time: Season 4: Ep. 3 “Rocky Road” Roundup

“Rocky Road”

“What’s that?”

“A device, I don’t bloody well know. I press the Emma button and she answers.”

Hook’s grasp on modern technology is downright endearing. If anything, his modern day interactions have succeeded in turning the dashing pirate into a loveable character. It’s not hard to empathize with Emma, I’m sure Hook has a legion of fans: he’s the ultimate converted bad boy.

Of course Hook isn’t the only villain to turn over a new leaf.  Without mayoral duties to drag her down, Regina is free to run amuck. And yet she’s doing what any hero would, saving lives and being honest. Anyone else shocked when she revealed her plan to Henry? Big step for the Evil Queen; I don’t think Regina has ever been this transparent. For once she wants to do things the right way, without force. Operation Mongoose is a go! Can’t wait to see what adventures Regina and Henry will have.

Just when Regina has come out of her break-up depression, she’s forced to face her ex and his wife. What terrible timing! Worse she’s asked to help save Marian’s life. Though if Marian does freeze to death I doubt she’ll be missed. Her character has a flat presence, and seems to have one on screen mission: prevent Robin Hood and Regina from being together. She’s a boring roadblock.

Looks like Snow White is Mayor now. Strange, I don’t remember the election. Perhaps it was so unanimous that an election wasn’t warranted. I love how Snow White brings the baby everywhere, including the town meeting she’s heading up. Being a new mom is challenging enough without having another full time job to attend to. There are plenty of working moms out there, proving it can be done, but none of it comes easy. Good luck Snow White!

Back in the land of Frozen, Elsa and Kristoff work together to protect the kingdom of Arendelle from an invading army. Unwilling to destroy a magic urn that could trap her, Elsa instead discovers someone, like her with magic, inside it. If the Ice Queen is being honest, she isn’t Elsa’s mother as I’d wondered last week, but her aunt. There are some interesting similarities here, between the two generations of sisters: magical blondes and ordinary redheads. I suspect Elsa and Anna have a healthier relationship than their mother and Aunt.

Bitter over her imprisonment, the Ice Queen is determined to prove a point to Elsa, no matter the cost. She’ll do anything to prove how isolated Elsa is. She reasons, people like them can’t be loved by friends or family. The Ice Queen claims Anna put Elsa in the urn, but I just don’t believe it. Not Anna. She’s all heart. IF Anna did then I’d be inclined to say the Ice Queen had something to do with it. Once more Once Upon a Time teaches us how complicated family can be. Of course anyone with siblings already knows that.

Back in Storybrooke, no one seems to recall the Ice Queen. She’s been erased from their memories! No one knows her, no one except Mr.Gold that is. He not only knows her but also seems to be in on the plan. He’s up to no good himself, masquerading as a newly domesticated man. Poor Belle. Imagine the trust issues she’s going to have! Belle has been blinded by love, Rumpel never intended to give up his power. It’s too addictive. Neal’s death taught him nothing. Do couples in Storybrooke get divorces? Because that’s where Mr. Gold is headed if he keeps leading a double life. Obviously love doesn’t conquer all.

Speaking of love, Hook earned a victory at long last. Turns out Emma’s been avoiding him because she loves him. And as she said, every man she’s ever loved ends up dead. That would make me a little gun shy too. With Hook, she has nothing to worry about, he’s made a life out of surviving danger, he is after all a pirate.

Fantastic writing, with plenty of one liners that will make you laugh. This episode is a vast improvement over last week’s. The Frozen story continues to be a fascinating well done theme. Can’t wait to see how the two tales of Elsa and The Ice Queen continue to merge.
