In a move that is obviously made to take advantage of the Blu-ray Disc’s superior 50GB capacity and to ward off pressure from Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which is still strapped to the much lower 9GB capacity of the DVD, and Nintendo’s Wii, which has an even lower disc capacity, Video Business is reporting that Sony is readying to release hybrid Blu-ray movie/video game releases.
In addition to the video games the discs would come packed with full 1080p high definition feature length films and would also contain access to dowloadable versions of the films that users could transfer to their Playstation Portable devices.
The article goes on to quote John Koller, Sony’s director of hardware marketing for the PS3, as stating: “We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc. There are a lot of developers who say, we have this game based on a movie, wouldn’t it be great to marry these concepts? We will definitely see this stuff this year.”
This move by Sony is yet more evidence of the ever-growing popularity of the video game market and the march towards convergence. It also comes only weeks after the Media Control GfK International report of video game sales surpassing DVD sales for the first time ever.
