The Film

[Rating:4/5]

Here is a timeless classic for generations of surfers and anyone who has ever wanted to head out and see the world, in the grand tradition of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Director Bruce Brown’s 1960’s documentary The Endless Summer, capturing the journey of California surfing buddies Robert August and Mike Hynson is a colorful and captivating adventure. It’s the journey of two friends following an “endless summer” around the globe, in search of the perfect wave. From the coasts of California and Africa, to the reefs of Australia, Tahiti and Hawaii, the two pals find some of the most peaceful surf in the world, some places that had never previously been surfed.

Thrown down your burdens, forget about your cares, become one with the waves, and hang ten, man.

Endless Summer will probably never look great or become spectacular high definition reference material, but it does look film-like nonetheless. I did notice some posterization and color banding in this transfer, however, and there are spots of source damage and lens dirt still apparent.

Whether you go for the lossless 2.0 or 5.1 mix, you’re basically getting stereo sound with The Endless Wave. My recommendation is to stay with the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mix. Either way, despite rather intelligible narration, there are some dropouts and crackle throughout that hinder the presentation.

Monterey has provided a digital copy, but it is on the Blu-ray Disc itself, so unless you have a Blu-ray drive on your PC, you won’t be able to download it.

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:2.5/5]

The Endless Summer is a charming and timeless adventure from the early days of surfing as a sport. More than just a film about a trip around the world, it’s a film about a journey to find one’s self.
