The Series

In this first Volume of Tosh.O, dubbed ‘Hoodies’ (because Tosh is wearing a hoodie in each of these 10 episodes), Tosh tackles topics, all from random Internet videos. No nothing on Tosh is original material (video-wise). Rather, Tosh shows us a series of clips, and then just comments on them, typically with the kind of humor that either A) makes us shake our heads or B) makes us laugh-out-loud. While I’m not as big a fan of his newer shows (I feel they’ve become a bit too gross-out), I can’t help but find myself laughing at Tosh’s comments. I’ll list the 10 episodes below, as well as include a brief description of what each is about.
- Afro Ninja – Here Tosh gives a Web Redemption for the Afro Ninja, who failed at performing a backflip for a Nike commercial.
- Miss South Carolina – Tosh gives Miss South Carolina (you know the one who bumbled her way through a speech about U.S. education) another chance to redeem herself.
- News Puke Kid – The News Puke Kid, a kid who vomited on live TV, is given a second chance.
- Scarlet Takes a Tumble – This isn’t that funny an episode. The title sums up the episode well.
- Leave Britney Alone! – The now infamous Chris Crocker is given a chance to explain his meaning behind the viral hit.
- Billoon45 – The Balloon Man is given another chance to see if, just maybe, he can fit himself inside a balloon.
- Worst Best Man Speech – A Best Man, who drunkenly stumbled through his speech, is given a shot at redeeming himself.
- Reh Dogg – This is the oddest episode of the bunch, almost to the point where I don’t know how to explain it.
- Drunk Dunk – A Drunk Slam Dunk Basketball player is given a chance to explain the reasoning behind his video.
- Skateboard Girl – A girl who fell flat on her face, is given a 2nd chance.
To be honest, if you haven’t seen any of Daniel Tosh’s comedy, I’d recommend seeing his Happy Thoughts stand-up first before diving into this. Yes, his stand-up is far more vulgar as he doesn’t have any restrictions; however, you don’t have to see his awkward responses to some of the videos viewers send in. If you have seen his stand-up and, most importantly, find his style of comedy funny, definitely check out this 1st Volume.
Video Quality

Using a mix of footage via internet videos and Tosh in front of a green screen, the series 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer, is mostly solid. Colors are spot on, whether the bright green screen or Daniel’s varying hoodies. Some of the live action moments, where Tosh visits former rejects, do result in a consistent image. Grain levels are kept in check while facial flesh tones are accurate. Contrast levels, as well, are spot on with no instance of overly pumped up levels. All in all, considering this is a TV series, the image is just fine.
Audio Quality

The series arrives with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, which suits the material well. With this being a dialogue driven series, I expected a rather front-heavy mix. Such is the case here, however, it’s really not that bad a thing. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout with no instance of drop out. The numerous track laughs, or audience laughs, do open up the mix a little bit. Atmosphere is mostly reserved for said laughs as they can occasionally be heard from either left rear or right rear. LFE is fairly absent with the exception of the varying hip-hop themed clips (or the show’s theme). All in all, this is a track that handles everything just fine.

Tosh.O can certainly be hit-or-miss comedy. Sometimes over-the-top, yet other times downright hilarious. This set from Paramount includes a mostly solid collection of his skits, something of which fans will definitely want to add to their collections. Everyone else should stick with a rental.
